As far back as I can remember, I always wanted to be really good at my job, get promotions, and get paid more money…

One of my first jobs was delivering pizzas when I was in high school. My goal there was to be able to handle more orders and make more deliveries than the other employees…

The quicker I was, the more deliveries I could make, and therefore more tips…

My first job related to my career was pouring concrete while on summer break in college.

Again, I wanted to make more money so I focused on learning the skilled work instead of the laborer work. I wanted to make more money, and the guys on the finish crew made the most. That’s where I wanted to be, and it’s where I ended up….

Guess what, my first job after college was no different. I started out as a field engineer and I wanted to climb the ranks. I got really good at the tasks I needed to do and always asked for more opportunities…

I asked how to get ahead…

I asked to get promoted, get raises, become the boss…

I did what they said, learn my bosses job and train my replacements…

Except…

I didn’t learn my boss’s job very well…

And I didn’t believe my replacement could do my job…

Because no one told me to get really good at leadership, at communication, at building teams…

No one told me at some point you have to stop being the student and become the teacher…

I see a lot of emerging leaders in almost every industry falling into the same trap…

They are hungry to do big things, achieve inner greatness, and become the boss…

But they only work on themselves…

They try to get more hard skills…

They try to get more certs, more resume builders…

But then when promoted, they have to learn leadership and soft skills the hard way…

On the job training they haven’t prepared for…

Skills you can master in a weekend…

Hell, I’ve been working on them for years and still have so much more to learn…

If this sounds like you, my advice…

You need to work on soft skills…

Join a toastmasters…

Run a team…

Write 500 words per day…

Do uncomfortable things…

Because when you step into the role of the boss, you’re going to feel lost, uncomfortable, and unsure how to get the message to the team…

I host a ZER0-COST MasterMind for people who want to get really good at their career and we meet tonight at 630 pm PST. Now, I don’t host it only out of the good of my own heart (part of the reason), but because I’m continually learning and practicing my soft skills so I can be really good at my career too. So, why don’t you come sit in on our call, push me to the brink of my comfort zone, and learn how to tap into your inner greatness
