What advice do you have for an up and comer who wants to get ahead in their career?

This is a question I’ve been asked many times, and more so recently (probably because I host a mastermind about this topic😆)….

I’ve noticed the answer people are expecting is very different from the answer I give…

You see, most people think the thing they need most is getting really good at the parts of their career they can control:

✅ Learn a new skill

✅ Take another training

✅ Get a certification

✅ Pad the resume 

But my answer is usually something to do with getting really good at the things that you can’t control:

🧨 Get Better at Public Speaking

🧨 Study Emotional Intelligence 

🧨 Teach Someone to Teach Something

🧨 Get good at asking questions

If you want to get really good at your career, you have to work on your soft skills, and the way you do that is getting more reps, more at bats…

At some point in your career you will transition from what you can get done as an individual to what you can get done with a team…

And managing a team is the epitome of nothing being in your control…

You can’t willpower a team to win…

You can’t grind everyone a little harder to get shit done consistently…

You can’t point to a certification to inspire greatness…

In order to lead, you must be able to influence, communicate, and get others to clearly understand the mission…

Leaders aren’t born, they are created, forged in fire, battle tested…

These soft skills take time to develop, and they are never mastered.
